More than 18,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox have now been reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) from more than 78 countries and regions, with more than 70 percent of the cases reported from Europe, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the WHO, said on Wednesday.
"So far, five deaths have been reported, and about 10 percent of monkeypox cases are admitted to hospital to manage the pain caused by the disease," he mentioned.
世衛組織衛生緊急項目執行主任麥可•瑞安說，世衛組織已啟動對猴痘重新命名的程序，以免病毒名稱被「武器化」或以種族主義方式使用。
世衛組織建議醫護人員等高危人群接種疫苗，但目前不建議大規模接種猴痘疫苗。該組織還提醒，在接種第二劑疫苗數周后才能獲得完全保護，在那之前，人們仍需採取其他預防措施。

The World Health Organization has promoted a more targeted vaccination program against the virus and not a 「mass vaccination,」 plan against the virus. The organization recommended vaccinations for those exposed to someone infected and those at high risk of exposure.

Officials of San Francisco, California, declared a state of emergency on Thursday in response to the growing spread of monkeypox across the city.
"We want the flexibility to be able to use our resources to best serve the public and protect health," San Francisco Health Officer Susan Philip said.
Philip emphasized that she was not planning to call for any closures or restrictions, which distinguishes the emergency declaration from the health orders issued amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The U.S. government received criticism that the officials were too slow in deploying the vaccine for monkeypox.
Despite sending more than 310,000 doses of the two-shot monkeypox vaccine to state and local officials, clinics in major hubs like New York City and San Francisco came up short on dosages to meet the demand.
巴西發現三例兒童猴痘病例

Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city, confirmed the country's first three cases of monkeypox in children on July 28. The children "are being monitored and do not show any signs of deterioration," according to the Sao Paulo Health Department. The health department did not say how the three children became infected.
