靈璧石質地細膩溫潤，滑如凝脂，石紋褶皺纏結、肌理縝密，石表起伏跌宕、溝壑交錯，造型粗獷崢嶸、氣韻蒼古。常見的石表紋理有胡桃紋、蜜棗紋、雞爪紋、蟠螭紋、龜甲紋、璇璣紋等多種，有些紋理交相異構、竇穴委婉，富有韻律感。
靈璧石最常見的就是黑色，也是最經典的顏色，這種黑黃相間的就比較少，為什麼稱其為龍龜奇石呢，因為其頭上左右有兩角凸起，形似龍龜的角，而烏龜是沒有角的，故而更似龍龜，背面凹凸的紋理形似龜甲，頸部較細，而頭部碩大，更符合龍龜的形象。
