今天我們接著來看第87課的「每課一句」。
一、課文原文
Lesson 87 A perfect alibi
'At the time the murder was committed, I was travelling on the 8 o'clock train to London,' said the man.
'Do you always catch such an early train?' asked the inspector.
'Of course I do,' answered the man.' I must be at work at 10 o'clock. My employer will confirm that I was there on time.'
'Would a later train get you to work on time?' asked the inspector.
'I suppose it would, but I never catch a later train.'
'At what time did you arrive at the station?'
'At ten to eight. I bought a paper and waited for the train.'
'And you didn't notice anything unusual?'
'Of course not.'
'I suggest,' said the inspector, 'that you are not telling the truth. I suggest that you did not catch the 8 o'clock train, but that you caught the 8.25 which would still get you to work on time. You see, on the morning of the murder, the 8 o'clock train did not run at all. It broke down at Ferngreen station and was taken off the line.'

二、每課一句
I suggest that you did not catch the 8 o'clock train, but that you caught the 8.25 which would still get you to work on time.
suggest常見的意思有「建議；暗示，提醒」。
如果表示「建議」，其後接賓語從句時，從句的謂語動詞一般要採用虛擬語氣的形式，即：should+do。其中，should可以省略。如：
I suggested to him that we (should) tackle the problem another way.
我向他建議我們用另一種方式處理這個問題。
如果表示「暗示，提醒」，其後接賓語從句時，從句的謂語動詞則根據實際情況，該採用什麼形式就使用什麼形式。如課文中的這句話中，suggest後面接了由「not...but...」引導的兩個並列句，而這兩個句子都是suggest的賓語從句。
因為這兩個句子的謂語動詞分別是did not catch和caught，都不是「should+do」的形式，所以前面的suggest就不是表「建議」，而是表「暗示；表明」。
課文中還有一句也是這樣的用法：
I suggest ... that you are not telling the truth.
我提醒你，你沒有說實話。
類似的用法再比如：
The mistakes in your exercise books suggest that you have not paid enough attention to grammar.
你練習本上的錯誤說明你對語法注意不夠。
此外，suggest如果後面直接接動詞，則採用「suggest doing」的用法，表示「建議做某事」。如：
I have written him a letter and suggested his giving the plan up.
我已給他寫去一封信建議放棄那個計劃。

At the time the murder was committed, I was travelling on the 8 o'clock train to London.
注意句中的at the time表示「當...時候」，其後是直接接從句的，不能再用when。
類似的用法還有「by the time+從句」，表示「到...時候為止」。只是，要注意從句的動作如果是發生在過去，則採用一般過去時，而其主句動作則要採用過去完成時；如果從句的動作發生在將來，則採用一般現在時，而其主句的動作則要採用將來完成時。如：
She had slipped into a coma by the time she reached hospital.
到醫院時，她已陷入昏迷。
By the time you get back I will have finished it.
到你回來時我已經把活做完了。
