Tennis star Novak Djokovic’s entry into Australia has been denied after an issue was discovered in his visa application stemming from② the medical exemption he received in order to play in the upcoming Australian Open. The Australian Border Force issued a statement early Thursday local time saying Djokovic failed to provide the required evidence to enter into the Victorian city of Melbourne, and therefore 「his visa has been subsequently③ canceled」. Australian media reported that after arriving around midnight local time Wednesday, Djokovic applying for the wrong kind of visa led to the Serbian tennis player spending hours at the Tullamarine Airport while the issue was investigated. The Victorian state government mandated that entrance to Melbourne Park, where the tournament will begin on January 17, would be limited to players, officials④, fans and other staff who are fully vaccinated. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in a tweet: 「Rules are rules, especially when it comes to our borders. No one is above these rules.」 (Newsweek & Washington Post)

Italy sending Parthenon fragment to Athens in nudge① to UK

An Italian museum is lending a fragment of the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece, in what both sides hope will become a permanent return that might encourage others—the British Museum, in particular—to send their own pieces of the works back, too. Sicily’s A. Salinas Archaeological Museum said Wednesday it had signed an agreement with the Acropolis Museum in Athens for a once-renewable, four-year loan of the small white marble piece it has, in exchange for a loan of a statue and amphora②. But the ultimate aim is the 「indefinite③ return」 of the fragment to Athens. About half the surviving 5th century B.C. Parthenon sculptures are in the British Museum, which has long resisted Greek appeals④ for their return. But small fragments are also held in other European museums. 「The return to Athens of this important artefact⑤ of the Parthenon goes in the direction of building a Europe of culture that has its roots in our history and in our identity,」 said Sicily’s councilor for cultural heritage and identity, Alberto Samonà. China, US, UK, France and Russia pledge to avoid nuclear war

Five of the world’s largest nuclear powers pledged on Monday to work together toward 「a world without nuclear weapons」 in a statement of unity. 「A nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought,」 said the joint statement, which was issued simultaneously by the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom and France. 「As nuclear use would have far-reaching① consequences, we also affirm that nuclear weapons—for as long as they continue to exist—should serve defensive purposes, deter② aggression, and prevent war.」 The statement also stressed the importance of preventing conflict between nuclear-weapon states from escalating③, describing it as a 「foremost responsibility.」 The statement released by the five powers, also known as the P5, as permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, called on all states to 「create a security environment more conducive④ to progress on disarmament⑤ with the ultimate goal of a world without nuclear weapons with undiminished security for all.」 (CNN)

Europe plans to say nuclear power and natural gas are green investments

The European Union has drawn up plans to classify some nuclear power and natural gas plants as green investments that can help Europe cut planet-warming emissions, a landmark① proposal that, if approved, could set off② a resurgence③ of nuclear energy on the continent in the coming decades. The European Commission said it had begun consultations with European Union countries on the proposal, which is intended to provide a common set of definitions of what constitutes a 「sustainable investment」 in Europe. 「The Commission considers there is a role for natural gas and nuclear as a means to facilitate the transition towards a predominantly④ renewable-based future,」 the statement, released on Saturday, said. Emergency declared in Kazakhstan as protests rage① and government resigns

Unrest broke out in cities across Kazakhstan on Wednesday, as thousands angrily protested a sharp gas price hike that sparked the resignation of the Central Asian country’s government. Local media reported the airport in the country’s biggest city, Almaty, was breached② by protesters, while a state of emergency has been introduced throughout the country, state-run Khabar 24 reports. It will be implemented③ until January 19, with the news agency saying restrictions on movement, including transport, were introduced in all three major cities and 14 regions. In the three cities, local administration officials came under attack, buildings were damaged and 「stones, sticks, gas, pepper, and Molotov cocktails④ were used,」 according to a statement by the Interior Ministry. The press service of the Almaty airport told local outlet there were 「about 45 invaders at the airport」 on Wednesday evening. 「The airport employees evacuated⑤ passengers on their own,」 they added.
