如今的地鐵四通八達，我們可謂是住在軌道上的城市。然而坐地鐵的時候，你可否留意不同的城市地鐵的英語叫法居然還有區別？
首先我們來看看國內的主要代表城市地鐵的叫法：廣州和上海採用 metro 的叫法，但北京地鐵的叫法卻採用了 subway，其實國內對地鐵的翻譯沒有嚴格的規定，都是按照當時及當地的實際情況以及翻譯習慣而採用的英文。
國內還有其他城市對地鐵的不同稱呼，比如香港的地鐵稱為Mass Transit Railway，簡稱 MTR。
地鐵的不同說法
對國內地鐵叫法有了初步了解後，我們再來看看國際上地鐵的叫法區別：
underground：地鐵，地下的
雖然世界上第一條地鐵是1863年在英國倫敦建成的，叫做 「Metropolitan and District Railway」（都會區鐵路），但是英國人並沒有將之稱為metro，而是將地鐵稱為 underground，是地底下的通道。
例句
They went on the underground.
他們乘地鐵去的。
She commutes by underground.
她乘地鐵上下班。
另外，英國人也喜歡將 underground 稱為 tube（管道），地下鐵長長一條通道就像管道，於是就有了 tube 的說法。
例句
It's easy to get around London on the tube.
乘地鐵逛倫敦很方便。、
There's a tube station a couple of blocks away from here.
從這裡走幾個街區就有一個地鐵站。
subway：地鐵
subway 常用在北美地區，其中的sub就有表示地下，在...下面的意思，北京的地鐵就使用了subway這種叫法。
這裡要注意的是：在英式英語裡，確實存在 subway 的說法，但意思並不是「地鐵」，而是指「行人從街道的一邊穿行到另一邊的地下通道」，是「地下通道」的意思。
例句
I took/rode the subway to midtown.
我乘坐地鐵去市中心。
No one on the subway seemed to mind how crowded it was.
地鐵上似乎沒有人會介意有多擁擠。
metro：地鐵，大都市
metro 這個詞最開始來源於來自法語 métropolitain 的縮寫，後來簡化為métro, 最後也被英語吸收成為 metro 表示地鐵，雖然很多城市有地鐵 metro 的叫法，但它尤指巴黎地鐵。
metro 除了表示地鐵外，還有大都市，大城市的含義。
例句
We took the metro to the museum. = We went by metro to the museum.
我們搭乘地鐵去博物館。
The event was attended by people from all over the metro [=metropolitan] area.
這次活動的參加者來自整個大都會區。
總結：
metro 除了指「地鐵」，在歐洲大陸地區還可以指「城軌系統」；subway 主要使用在北美地區，但也有一些北美城市使用 metro；subway 在英式英語中，指「地下通道」；underground 主要在英國地區使用，但也有例外，比如蘇格蘭的格拉斯哥就使用 subway； 至於亞洲地區，「地鐵」翻譯不統一，不同地區說法都不一樣。
因此，我們只要大概記住它們的大致原則：在美國用 subway；在英國用 underground；在世界其它地區用 metro。

I've ridden on the New York subway, the Paris Metro, and the London Underground.
我乘坐過紐約、巴黎和倫敦這三個城市的地鐵。
