Stanford University published an index of "harmful language" it plans to eliminate from the school’s websites and computer code, offering terms to be used as replacements.
在該指南中American（美洲人，美國人）、survivor（倖存者）、victim（受害者）、immigrant（移民）等一些常見詞語均被列為有害用語或不建議使用的用語。
史丹福大學建議大家避免使用 American（美國人）一詞，取而代之使用the US citizen（美國公民）一詞。
因為American通常只指來自美國的人，暗示美國是美洲最重要的國家，而實際上美洲由42個國家組成，因此屬於不精確語言，建議美國人不要使用該詞指代自己，以免輕視美洲其他地區，可以改用 the US citizen。
Among the words the university urges people to avoid in the imprecise language section is the term, "American". People are instead asked to use "US Citizen" because "American" typically refers to "people from the United States only, thereby insinuating that the US is the most important country in the Americas." The Americas, the index notes, comprises 42 countries.

The guide says its goal is to eliminate "many forms of harmful language," including "racist, violent, and biased (e.g., disability bias, ethnic bias, ethnic slurs, gender bias, implicit bias, sexual bias) language" in Stanford websites and code.

指南中將有害語言分為10個部分，分別是能力歧視、年齡歧視、殖民主義、文化挪用、基於性別的語言歧視、不精確語言、制度化種族主義、人物第一用語、暴力和其他注意事項。
There are 10 "harmful language" sections outlined in the index: ableist, ageism, colonialism, culturally appropriative, gender-based, imprecise language, institutionalized racism, person-first, violent and additional considerations.
倡議發出後，在美國社會引發熱烈的討論。有不少網友支持史丹福大學發布的指南。
這個詞被操縱了，加拿大人、墨西哥人也都在北美洲......他們都是美洲人。真的，來自美國的人應該被稱為美國公民。
但有美國網友表示這很難以理解，馬斯克（Elon Musk）在推特上攻擊這份倡議稱：史丹福大學不同意說你為自己是American而自豪？天啦！
同時，《華爾街日報》評論文章也辛辣嘲諷了這一觀點。
Call yourself an "American"? Please don’t. Better to say "US citizen" per the bias hunters, lest you slight the rest of the Americas…And don’t dare design a "blind study", which "unintentionally perpetuates that disability is somehow abnormal or negative, furthering an ableist culture."
稱自己是「American」？別了吧。按照偏見獵手的說法，最好說「US citizen」，以免你輕視美洲其他國家……也別斗膽設計一個「blind study」（盲測），這「無意中刻畫了殘疾在某種程度上是不正常的或消極的印象，進一步助長了能力歧視」。
面對爭議，史丹福大學首席信息官史蒂芬·加拉格爾（Steve Gallagher）回應稱網站文章不代表大學的政策，斯坦福也沒有禁止使用American一詞。
"First and importantly, the website does not represent university policy. It also does not represent mandates or requirements. The website was created by, and intended for discussion within, the IT community at Stanford.

"To be very clear, not only is the use of the term 'American' not banned at Stanford, it is absolutely welcomed."
