The Spring Festival is a day for family reunion. But for 120 (China's emergency call) Emergency medical technicians, where there is a call for help, there is their figure. As the deputy chief of the Central South Station of Wuhan Emergency Center, Wang Hui, who has worked for more than 20 years in emergency treatment, was unable to rest during this Spring Festival. He and his colleagues have been running around to emergency scenes.

「Emergency! An elderly person with an aortic dissection and in critical condition needs to be transferred!」 On the morning of the third day of the lunar New Year, Wang Hui received the task from the Control Center of Wuhan Emergency Center, and was immediately ready to meet the challenge.

After a quick check of drugs and equipment, Wang Hui and his colleagues boarded the ambulance and rushed to the hospital where the patient was. On the way, he contacted the patient's family and repeatedly inquired about the patient's current condition. Wang knew that the transfer was extremely risky.

「Aortic dissection is very dangerous. Even a slight jolt on the way may cause the rupture of blood vessels in the patient's heart, which can be life-threatening in a short time.」 Wang Hui told the Jimu News reporter that emergency doctors should not only reach patients as fast as possible but also transport them to their destinations efficiently to save time for later treatment.

On arriving at the hospital, Wang Hui and his colleagues rushed to the elderly patient first. His heart settled down after he confirmed that the condition of the patient was still stable and under control. After handing the patient over to the doctor, Wang Hui helped to hold and lift the patient onto a trolley stretcher.

From the ward to the ambulance, and then to the destination hospital, Wang Hui's colleagues carefully pushed the stretcher, while Wang Hui was busy helping with all coordination to shorten the transfer time. The reporter observed that Wang Hui's eyes were around the elderly and the monitor along the way. He kept an eye on the patient's condition in case of an emergency, and also comforted her from time to time: 「Grandma, don't worry. We will be there soon.」

Fortunately, the transfer went smoothly. Wang Hui and his colleagues were not relieved until the patient was handed over to the doctor in charge of the wards. When Wang Hui returned to the station and took off his coat, the reporter noticed that his clothes inside were drenched in sweat.

Just as Wang Hui sat down to rest for just a few minutes, another emergency task came in. He and his colleagues rushed to the next station with no time for lunch. He said that a call for help is a command for an emergency crew, and time is life. It has become an instinctive reaction to leave immediately upon receiving a task, no matter when or where they receive the call.

Tasked with saving lives, the emergency crew strained every nerve

「Compared to last December when COVID-19 infections peaked, we can breathe a sigh of relief now」, Wang Hui said. On December 10, 2022, he had a high fever and a headache, which turned out to be an infection of COVID-19 after an examination. As the deputy chief of the first-aid station, Wang Hui was worried because if he fell ill, his colleagues would have to take over his tasks. At the toughest time, his team was infected one after another and could not function normally. On the third day, following the infection, Wang Hui gritted his teeth and returned to work.

During that difficult period, the first-aid team was on duty for 24 hours. 「We worked all night, transferring one patient after another, sometimes 20 times a night.」 Wang Hui recalled that he also had to be a stretcher bearer temporarily due to the dearth of labor resulting from COVID-19. Although he had not fully recovered, he still gritted his teeth and climbed upstairs in some old residential communities where there were no elevators. Under the heavy workload, even in winter, his clothes repeatedly alternated between being dry to sweaty.

A second can mean the difference between life and death. Wang Hui is among the numerous emergency personnel at the Central South Station of Wuhan Emergency Center. Some of them were unable to take care of their own young kids or ill elders. They could only tell their relatives and friends to protect themselves and rest, and rushed to the front line of transportation themselves, even though they had not fully recovered.

According to the records reviewed by the Jimu News reporter, the number of emergency calls and transfers has continued to reach a record high since December 2022. The maximum daily call volume reached 18,000, and the average daily call volume reached 11,000, 1400 times, an increase of 2 to 4 times compared with the same period last year.

Wang Hui said, 「In the face of life, emergency workers will strain every nerve to do the work without fear.」
