在日常交流中，外國人常說的「not half」千萬別理解成「不是一半」，否則就會貽笑大方啦。請看：
「not half」有兩個非常矛盾的含義：
（1）第一個含義： 「not half」英文解釋：used in spoken English to express a positive statement more strongly，中文即「（加強肯定語氣的口語表達）非常，很,完全地，徹底地」，相當於：quite , very, very much, a lot, to a considerable degree， completely， absolutely 或 entirely .「 此時在英語口語中可以用在形容詞（副詞）或名詞的前面，起到加強語氣的作用（尤其在英國英語中）。如：
It’s not half cold today. 今天很冷。
It isn’t half windy.風颳得很大。
The show was not half good.
這場表演很好。
The paper you wrote is not half good.
你寫的這篇文章棒極了。
It wasn't half crowded in the club last night.
昨晚俱樂部里人多得不得了。
It wasn't half crowded in the English Corner on Friday evening.
英語角周五晚上人特別多。
I am not half tired after the long trip.
長途旅行以後，我疲憊不堪。
Do you like chocolates ? Oh, not half.
你喜歡吃巧克力嗎》啊，非常喜歡。
She doesn’t half swear.她破口大罵。
=She quite swears
（2）第二個含義：not at all 中文即「一點也不，一點都不，根本不是，遠遠不」，如：
The food’s not half bad.這食物很好。（特別是與bad連用就是這個含義）
The outcome of the experiment was not half bad.
試驗的結果相當好。
Your room is not half bad.
你的房間相當好。
This book, which is written by a rather unknown young writer, is not half bad.
這本書是一個沒有名氣的年輕作家所寫，寫得很是不錯。
Stop piling it on: it's not half as bad as you make it appear.
別誇大其詞了，事情根本不象你所說的那麼壞。
He might divine some delicacy of feeling here, but did not half understand it.
這裡包含的微妙情緒，他可能有些察覺, 但根本不能完全理解。
He is not half such a fool as they think.
他遠不是他們以為的那麼傻。
My English is not half as good as yours.
我的英語一點也沒有你的好。

或譯為：他一點也不是他們以為的那麼傻。
My work is not half done yet.

他的英語遠不如他弟弟說得流暢。
It wasn't half as good as that other restaurant we went to.
這家餐館一點也沒有我們去的那一家餐館好了。
當形容詞或副詞後面有enough時，not half也是此種用法和含義：
The rope is not half long enough.
這根繩子的長度遠遠不夠。
