About the event活動簡介

Over a billion students worldwide are unable to go to school or university due to measures to stop the spread of COVID-19. The pandemic is expected to have enormous economic consequences and it is also having a devasting impact on global education, causing a tremendous level of stress for students, parents, and educators at home and abroad.

We would like to invite you to watch a live conference with the theme on 「How will COVID-19 change the landscape of international education?」,which will be held by CCG onFriday April 17, 2020 , 8:00pm-10:00pm Beijing Time(8:00am-10:00am Eastern Time).This virtual conference aims to assess the current situation, dilemmas, needs and future of Chinese international students resulted from the COVID-19 outbreak worldwide, as well as provide insights and perspectives from a group of prominent experts drawn from the leading international education agencies, including universities and colleges, flagship corporations, international schools, and private consultancies.

In light of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) response and in an abundance of caution, this conference will be held via Zoom. CCG will now live stream this event to the public across different media platforms.You will be able to watch the live broadcast either by phone or laptop.

Peggy Blumenthal

Senior Counselor to the President

at the Institute of International Education

Ms. Blumenthal is senior counselor to the president at the Institute for International Education (IIE). With 30 years of service at IIE, Ms. Blumenthal became IIE's Chief Operating Officer in 2005, transitioning to the role of Senior Counselor to IIE President in 2011. Before joining IIE, Ms. Blumenthal served as Assistant Director of Stanford University's Overseas Studies and was also a staff member of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and the Asia Society's China Council.

Nick Miles

Provost and Pro-Vice-Chancellor,

University of Nottingham Ningbo China

Prof. Nick Miles is undertaking his second term as Provost of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. Between 2015 and 2019 he was Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement responsible for the University of Nottingham’s global engagement strategy and for the University’s advancement portfolio in promoting philanthropy and alumni development.

Prior to this, Nick was the Provost of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) between 2010 and 2015 and led the University through a period of substantive growth from 2,000 to 6,500 students and 300 to 800 staff achieving a turnover in excess of £50 million. He received the Camilla Award from the City of Ningbo (2013) in recognition of developing international education, the Zhejiang Province West Lake Friendship award (2014) and an OBE for services to UK/China educational interests in Her Majesty The Queen’s 2013 Birthday Honours list.

Professor Miles has an extensive research portfolio (over 40 PhD supervisions) supported through UK Research Councils, European, UK government, Zhejiang Provincial Government, Ningbo Municipal Government and industry funding and a strong record of inter-disciplinary research with colleagues in the physical sciences, including Chemistry and Physics. He has been a member of assessment panels for EPSRC (chair and panel member), NERC, Defra, DTI, ECSC and EU; and has over 120 publications.

Jeffrey Lehman

Prof. Lehman is the Vice Chancellor of NYU Shanghai, where he oversees all academic and administrative operations. Lehman is an internationally acclaimed leader in higher education, having served as dean of the University of Michigan Law School, the eleventh president of Cornell University, and the founding dean of the Peking University School of Transnational Law.

Prior to joining the University of Michigan Law School, Lehman served as law clerk to Frank M. Coffin, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and Associate Justice John Paul Stevens of the United States Supreme Court. He then spent four years at Caplin & Drysdale, a Washington, D.C. law firm. Throughout his professional and academic career, Lehman has volunteered his time and energy to nonprofit organizations that share his commitments in the fields of higher education, law, and technology.

Prof. Lehman is a multi-award winner for his work both in the US and abroad, including the Friendship Award, which is China’s highest honor for 「foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to the country’s economic and social progress.」 In 2018, Lehman was named one of the 40 most influential foreign experts in China during the four decades since the country began its process of 'reform and opening up』.

Stuart Perrin

Associate Principal of Entrepreneur College, Xi』an Jiaotong-Liverpool University

Prof. Stuart Perrin was appointed Associate Principal of XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang) by Xi』an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in August 2019. His responsibility is to develop the new campus of XJTLU in Taicang and explore the Syntegrative Education model at Taicang campus.

Previously, he was the inaugural Dean for International Affairs at the university, with responsibility for leading the internationalization agenda, including issues relating to the appointment and development of international faculty.

Prior to his appointment as Dean for International Affairs, he was the first Dean for Learning and Teaching for four years, combining the role with that of Director of the Language Centre. In the role of Director of the Language Centre, Stuart was responsibility for overseeing English, Chinese and Spanish language modules across all years, and developing writing support initiatives in the university.

Before being appointed to Xi』an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Stuart worked at a number of HEI’s within London, as well as at a number of private educational providers in the UK in the areas of pre-university and foundation programmes, in-sessional English and study skill provision, academic literacies and applied linguistics. Stuart is an active researcher, looking at the relationship between language and identity in EMIs, language policy, English as a Lingua Franca, academic literacies and processes of academic socialization, as well as issues of writing interpreting.

Prof. Shen is the Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (International Relations) and Professor of Alfred Deakin Institute at Deakin University.

Prior to Deakin, he was the Director of Confucius Institute and Professor of International Business at Lancaster University (UK), research fellow at Centre Asie of the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI), research assistant at Loughborough and Oxford Universities. Prof Shen is the founding Co-Chair of Alliance of Chinese and European Business Schools (ACE), Vice-President of EU-Asia Centre and International Advisory Board member for Beijing Jiaotong University. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) and the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) and has been an invited professor at Sciences Po de Paris, Institut des Hautes Etudes Européennes (Strasbourg), Bayreuth University, Antwerp Management School and several leading Chinese universities.

Prof. Shen has published widely on the topics of Asia-Europe relations, international education, migration and China’s economy and global role. Professor Shen’s recent research has been funded from the French National Research Agency (ANR), European Science Foundation and European Commission Jean Monnet Programme, and he currently coordinates the UACES-funded Collaborative Research Network on EU-China Relations with colleagues from College of Europe and Free University of Berlin. Wei Shen is the recipient of several awards including the Sir Robert Martin University Medal from Loughborough University, Fellowship of Salzburg Seminar and Our Common Future Fellowship from Volkswagen and Mercator Foundations.

Denis Simon

Dr. Denis Simon is Executive Vice Chancellor of Duke Kunshan University, a Sino-U.S. joint venture based in the city of Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, China. He also is Professor of China Business and Technology at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.

Dr. Simon joined Duke Kunshan University from Arizona State University, where he had served as Senior Adviser to the President for China-related Strategic Initiatives, executive director of the University Design Institute, and Foundation Professor of Contemporary Chinese Affairs in the School of Politics and Global Studies.

Dr. Simon previously held international affairs leadership positions and faculty appointments at several top universities in the United States and China, including the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, the Sloan School at MIT and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. An expert on the study of technological innovation, he also has extensive private sector experience, having held China-based senior leadership roles at both Monitor Consulting Group and Andersen Consulting (now Accenture). He has written and lectured widely regarding innovation, high technology development, foreign investment and corporate strategy in the Pacific-Rim and is frequently quoted in the Western and Asian business press regarding commercial and technology trends in China, Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region.

Dr. Huiyao Wang is the president of Center for China and Globalization (CCG), a non-government think tank in China that ranked among top 80 think tanks in the world. Dr. Wang is Vice Chairman of China Western Returned Scholars Association and is also a Professor and the Dean of Institute of Development Studies at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in China. He is an advisory member of Tsinghua University Students』 Global Competence Center, and was a senior fellow of Harvard Kennedy School, an adjunct professor at Guanghua Management School of Peking University and Ivey Business School of Western University as well as a visiting fellow at Brookings Institution.

Dr. Wang is also the Vice Chairman of China Association for International Economic Cooperation under Ministry of Commerce, Vice Chairman of China Talent Society.

Mark Wrighton

Prof. Wrighton was elected the 14th chancellor of Washington University in St. Louis in 1995 and served as its chief executive officer for 24 years.

Prof. Wrighton currently serves on the board of directors of: Brooks Automation, Cabot Corporation, Corning Incorporated, and Forest Park Forever. He also serves as a Trustee of Washington University in St. Louis, the Concordance Leadership Academy, the Institute of International Education, and the St. Louis Science Center.
